Ranked as the 18th largest economy globally, the Netherlands is home to major multinational corporations such as Philips, Heineken, KLM, Shell, ING, and Unilever. Renowned as a global leader in various fields such as agriculture, water management, art and design, logistics, and sustainable energy, the country actively seeks to attract and retain talent. To support this objective, the Dutch government offers international graduates the opportunity to apply for an orientation year—a one-year residence permit designed to facilitate job-seeking or entrepreneurial pursuits within three years of graduation.

In the Netherlands, a preference exists for a flat organizational structure over a hierarchical one. This fosters an environment where everyone is encouraged to be critical and express their opinions. Without unnecessary formalities, you can anticipate maintaining a casual and friendly relationship even with your instructors.

In the Netherlands, there are primarily two intakes: the September intake and the February intake. The September intake is considered the main admission period, during which all universities make available their study programs. On the other hand, the February intake serves as a secondary option. It allows students who may have missed the opportunity in September to apply for the Winter intake, enabling them to enroll without the need to wait for an entire year.

The Netherlands provides a unique post-study visa, which is a specific category of residence permit administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) and designed for individuals with a high level of education. This permit allows international students to seek employment in the country following the completion of their studies, doctoral programs, or research. Those aspiring to work in the Netherlands as startup entrepreneurs after graduation also have the option to apply for an orientation residence permit. The duration of the post-study work permit is valid for one year.

The deadlines for submitting applications differ based on the institution, specific courses, and factors like Numerus Fixus. Nevertheless, for many instances, the application deadline for non-EU students aiming to commence a course in September or October is typically April 1. However, in certain situations, this timeframe may be more limited. Specifically, applications for courses subjected to Numerus Fixus close on January 15 annually. Moreover, for non-EU applicants pursuing a scholarship, certain courses may have earlier closing dates.
