Ontario immigration News
Ontario, the biggest province in Canada, is making moves to ban Canadian work experience requirements from Job ads and applications. This will open up more opportunities for skilled workers looking for Canada immigration.
According to Ontario Labour Minister David Piccini, this initiative is beneficial for newcomers to Canada. He asserts, “For far too long, too many people arriving in Canada have been funneled toward dead-end jobs they’re overqualified for.”
The government expects that this new law will help more newcomers fill in-demand labor shortages across the province. “We need to ensure these people can land well-paying and rewarding careers that help tackle the labor shortage. When newcomers to Ontario get a meaningful chance to contribute, everyone wins.” Said the Labour Minister.
Expected results of the proposed legislative amendment
As highlighted in a recent statement from the provincial government, “this change would help more qualified candidates progress in the interview process and [is one step closer to making] it easier for internationally trained immigrants to find meaningful work and contribute to building Ontario.”
Moreover, Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michael Ford, emphasizes that “this change will help support families as they start their journey in their new homes, create more vibrant communities, and help ensure businesses have the talent they need.”
The influence of immigration on Ontario
As highlighted in the press release introducing this legislation, immigration plays a crucial role in Canada’s growth, particularly in Ontario, which annually welcomes the highest number of immigrants compared to any other province or territory in the country.
The press release further underscores, “Research has indicated that facilitating internationally trained newcomers to work in their studied professions could potentially boost the province’s GDP by up to $100 billion over five years.”
Other Initiatives by Ontario to welcome Highly Qualified Newcomers to Canada
In the new Ontario PNP update, Ontario’s Labour Minister underscores the importance of immigration to the province, emphasizing that “when newcomers in Ontario are given a meaningful opportunity to contribute, everyone benefits.”
In alignment with this perspective, Ontario aims to nominate 16,500 immigrants for permanent residence in 2023. This will be facilitated through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), the dedicated Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), with a focused initiative to welcome immigrants who can make substantial contributions to critical sectors, including health care and the skilled trades, within the provincial labour market.
The Ontario government is proposing several other changes aimed at enhancing the local labor market through immigration. According to the recent press release, three key efforts include:
- Expanding eligibility for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) to more international students in the province, achieved through the revision of eligibility requirements for numerous one-year college graduate certificate programs.
- Advocating for increased influence in selecting economic immigrants by urging the federal government to grant Ontario more significant decision-making authority. This process has already begun with the province successfully securing a higher allocation of Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations through the OINP, more than doubling by 2025 compared to 2021.
These initiatives collectively reflect Ontario’s commitment to stabilizing and strengthening the local labor market through strategic immigration measures.
- Enhancing supervision and responsibility” regarding the utilization of third-party organizations by regulated professions to “evaluate international qualifications, ensuring a prompt, transparent, and equitable assessment process.
