IRCC held its second express entry draw of this week. This time the draw was category-based and invited candidates in transport occupations to apply for permanent residence. The minimum CRS score required for eligibility was 435.

This is the first-ever draw for transport occupations.

First-ever draw for transport occupations

Yesterday’s draw was the first-ever category-based draw for Express Entry candidates with work experience in transport occupations. The target of transport occupations is because of an immediate labor shortage in this field.

“As Canada grows its economy, we’re committed to improving transport and infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country,” said Canada Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

The Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, stated “With this new initiative, we are helping address a critical skills shortage while also attracting new, talented people to communities across Canada. Truck drivers, pilots, aviation mechanical engineers, and seafarers play a critical role in our economy and Canadians’ lives. Filling vacancies in these professions will boost economic growth and create stronger and more resilient supply chains.”

The last express entry draw was held on 19th September and invited a total of 3,200 candidates in an all-program draw. The minimum CRS score required for eligibility was 531.

Express Entry Draws in August 2023

Three draws were held on August 2023 and invited a total of 4300 candidates over various categories.

Category-Based Express Entry Draws

Sean Fraser, Canada’s former Immigration Minister, announced the implementation of category-based selection draws that targeted Express Entry candidates. These draws aimed to attract a greater number of highly skilled professionals specializing in specific occupations that are in high demand within Canada.

The categories under the Express Entry Programs are:

  • Healthcare occupations
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Agriculture and Agri-food occupations
  • French-language proficiency

IRCC reviews these categories each year and may change them in the next year.
