Canada still welcoming Indian immigrants, despite the diplomatic dispute

Recently, a diplomatic dispute happened between India and Canada, over the assassination of a Canadian Sikh separatist leader.

The relationship strain started when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that there was credible intelligence to confirm that agents of the Indian government were involved in the assassination. The allegation was denied by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

As a result, on September 21, BLS International, India’s visa processing center in Canada, suspended services, citing operational reasons. This includes centers in Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver.

When asked if there would be any response movement from Canada, Trudeau said his focus was to maintain the rule of law in Canada. He said Canada would continue to do the work it took to keep Canadians safe.

Canada is still processing visas for Indian nationals, as it usually does. The processing times for visas for Indian nationals seeking to enter Canada remain unchanged. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plan to process 80% of applications within specified service standards, irrespective of the applicant’s nationality.

Canada is safe

Speaking with the press regarding this issue, Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated, “I think everyone knows Canada is a safe country and given the events of the last two or three days and the seriousness of the allegations, that – it’s important for everyone to stay calm.”

According to the most recent Global Peace Index, Canada ranks 11th among the safest countries in the world. Canada is globally acknowledged as a peaceful country and it consistently manages to rank among the safest countries in the world.

The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) 2022 report reveals that 40% of international students in Canada are Indians. This is in contrast to a warning issued by India’s government in September 2022. This implies that in the last academic year, approximately 320,000 Indian students were studying in Canada.

Canada’s welcoming attitude towards Indian immigrants

Canada is well-known for its welcoming attitude towards immigrants. India is the largest source country for immigration in Canada. In 2022, there were 118,095 Indians who gained permanent residence in Canada. Out of this, 59,503 Indians transitioned from permanent residents to Canadian citizens.

Canada’s immigration level plan 2023-2025 aims to welcome a total of 1.4 lakh immigrants within these three years. The next immigration plan is expected to be announced on November 1, and the number is expected to increase, as per reports.
