AHPRA REGISTRATION FOR INDIAN NURSES
Australia is one of the most in-demand destinations for Indian nurses, with strong opportunities across public hospitals, aged care,and community health. To work as a registered nurse in Australia, you must hold AHPRA(Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency)registration.
In April 2025, AHPRA introduced a new registration standard for
Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses(IQRNs), creating faster and more accessible routes for Indian nurses.
WHICH PATHWAY APPLIES TO YOU?
STREAMLINED PATHWAY
For Indian Nurses with Overseas Work Experience
If you qualified in India and have since worked as a registered nurse in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada(BC or Ontario), Singapore, or Spain, you may be eligible for the Streamlined Pathway.
This route does not require the NCLEX or OSCE examinations, making it significantly faster and more affordable.
- Must hold a nursing qualification from India (since 1 January 2017)
- Must have passed the nursing regulatory exam in an approved country (e.g.NCLEX in the USA or CBT in the UK)
- Must hold or have held registration in an approved country since 1 January 2017
- Must have completed at least 1,800 hours of practice in an approved country since 1 January 2017
Processing time:1 to 6 months
No NCLEX or OSCE required for eligible candidates.
OBA PATHWAY
For Indian Nurses Qualifying Directly from India
If you have not worked in any of the approved comparable countries, the Outcomes-Based Assessment (OBA) Pathway is your route to AHPRA registration. After completing the free AHPRASelf-check, most Indian nurses are placed in Stream B, which requires completing both the NCLEX-RN and OSCE examinations. both the NCLEX-RN and OSCE examinations
- NCLEX-RN: Online multiple-choice exam testing nursing knowledge. Can be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre in India. Fee: USD 350 total (USD 200 exam + USD 150 international scheduling fee)
- OSCE: Hands-on clinical examination conducted in person in Australia (Adelaide or Melbourne only). Fee: AUD 4,000 per sitting
Processing time:6 to 12 months
Both examinations must be passed before registration is granted.
